Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.1 John 4:7-12

Love. Could it be that love is so basic, so fundamental to the Christian faith that we sometimes fail to acknowledge it? We don't think about the air we breathe until it is in short supply. We don't appreciate the water we drink until we're thirsty and there's none around.

Love is where everything begins and where it should end. Today's reflection is just a reminder not to forget the most basic ingredient when you're baking today. What is a loaf of white bread without flour? You might have everything else—water, yeast, salt and oil—but without flour it's not going to hold your peanut butter very well when it comes out of the oven. Even though the other ingredients are there, it's not really bread at it?

As we mature in our faith and our pursuit of wisdom, it's easy to skip past this first step of loving others. It's like the guy who is so confident of his assembling ability that he opens the box, tosses the instructions aside and immediately starts connecting things. Then, after an hour or so of frustration, wrong moves and leftover parts, he picks up the instructions and starts over.

There is much to discuss on the topic of love, but for today let's keep it simple: Love each other. There will come a time when the trumpet sounds and the clouds are rolled back like a scroll and there we will sit, right in the middle of whatever it is we're doing. How awesome would it be if Jesus saw you showing love to someone at that moment?

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. – John 13:34
