It's Ok to Be a Nut

“Be yourself, everyone one else is already taken.” – Dr. Seuss

This afternoon I collected the above from four trees around the Hempfield Church of the Brethren parking lot. The sun was shining, the temperature was in the seventies and everything looked beautiful.

Each of these was created by a specific tree for a purpose. The other three might want to be an acorn but they can’t—they can only be the kind of fruit that’s produced by their own tree. The trees from which they came might want to make something different but they can’t—ultimately all they can do is be themselves to the best of their abilities.

Don’t waste your day today wishing you could be an acorn when you’re not. The acorn probably wishes it could be you! All that each of us can be is ourselves.

It would be pretty boring and dull if each tree was the same. Birds that can’t crunch acorns wouldn’t appreciate it, either! Each of us was fearfully and wonderfully made by our Creator just the way He wanted us to be. The hardest part, I guess, is being okay with that. “Couldn’t He have done better than me?” we ask.  The answer, of course, is that there is no better—just different.

And different is good.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. – Ps 139:14
