He Cares for You

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Matthew 10:29-31

Priscilla was a beautiful brown alpaca that was born during an extraordinarily busy time at Eastland Alpacas. Several births had taken place over the previous few days and Kevin and Sue were stretched even thinner than usual. Sue had a badly fractured ankle and Kevin's other full-time job as a general contractor was making for some very long days.

It was not long, however, before Kevin noticed that something was wrong with Priscilla. She lacked the strength to stand and did not appear to be nursing. The sweet little alpaca was weak and getting weaker. Unable to get her to take any fluids, he called their long-time veterinarian late at night and described the situation. The kindly vet reported that the only option was to take her to a emergency facility a good distance from them.

So Kevin told his wife what was going on, made sure she had everything she needed, and packed some food for the trip (and extra soda to stay awake). He hooked up the trailer and loaded all the necessarily supplies and then checked again on Priscilla. That's when Kevin says he witnessed "the hand of God".

"All of the sudden, she jumped up, shook herself, went over to her mother and started nursing," says Kevin. "She nursed for a full two minutes and then backed up a little. I nudged her back toward her mom and she nursed for another six minutes, which is a really long time." And then, as he sat in the pen, Priscilla began frolicking around as young alpacas do! Once Kevin was convinced that she was out of harm's way, he went upstairs to see Sue. Immediately Sue knew something had happened.

"What is it?" she asked. "Did she...die?"

"No," answered Kevin. "You're not going to believe this, but she is completely fine." He went on to describe everything that had happened. Sue listened and then finally spoke.

"You know, the whole time you were down there, I was praying," said Sue.

Kevin is admittedly not the most outwardly-emotional guy out there. But with tears in his eyes, he told us how important it is for everyone to know that they have something to give. If your body is giving you trouble, says Kevin, "you can still pray." Many are the prayer warriors among us whose bodies don't work like they used to but whose lifetime in the faith have made them mighty in prayer.

Prayer is indeed a powerful force in the universe and our way to connect with the Father. Can you see in the story of Priscilla how interested God is in the "little things" about our lives? The very same God who breathed the Universe into existence cares about little alpacas...and He cares about you, too. His "inbox" is never too full for another memo from you, so don't be afraid to take your questions and concerns to Him. He knows them already, but like the story in Luke 24 about the followers on the road to Emmaus, He seems to like to ask, "so what's going on?"

I can imagine that God was quite happy to heal Priscilla, who is still doing just fine. She is a sweet animal who doesn't seem to like the feel of concrete under her hooves but who blessed us at Hempfield COB by coming into church with Kevin on Easter Sunday this year.

In an age in which there is so much knowledge available to us, many things remain a mystery. And that's ok. But what is not a mystery is that God is Love (1 John 4:16). He loves alapacas, dogs, platypuses and you, too! He made all of them according to His plan and He longs to be in relationship with you. Reach out to Him today and see what miracles are in store!

I loved Kevin's story on Easter, and it really is a testimony to the power of prayer. We serve a wonderful God who cares about the smallest details of our lives. Keep on praying, Hempfield Church of the Brethren!
